Good support shouldn’t depend on where you are.
There are a hundred reasons why getting to a psychology appointment in person can feel difficult. A schedule that doesn’t leave room for travel. A week when getting out of the house feels like too much. A rural location that puts face-to-face services hours out of reach. Young children at home. A physical health condition that makes getting around hard. Or simply the particular kind of exhaustion that comes with depression or anxiety — where the idea of sitting in a waiting room feels like one obstacle too many.
Whatever your reason, it’s a real one. And it shouldn’t stand between you and the support you need.
At BlueSky Psychology, we offer online psychology sessions and phone counselling to make quality psychological support as accessible as possible — for people across Adelaide, South Australia, and beyond. The same experienced psychologists. The same warm, evidence-based approach. Just without the commute.
Is online counselling actually effective?
This is the question most people ask first, and it’s a fair one.
The research is reassuring. A substantial and growing body of evidence shows that online therapy and phone counselling are as effective as face-to-face sessions for a wide range of mental health concerns — including depression, anxiety, stress, trauma, relationship difficulties, and grief. The therapeutic relationship, which research consistently identifies as one of the most important factors in psychological outcomes, develops just as meaningfully through a screen or a phone as it does in a room.
For some people, online counselling is actually more effective — not less. The comfort and privacy of your own environment can make it easier to open up, to be honest, and to do the kind of work that therapy asks of you.
What can online psychology help with?
Online psychology sessions and phone counselling at BlueSky Psychology can support a wide range of concerns, including depression, anxiety, stress, panic attacks, grief and loss, relationship difficulties, trauma, burnout, low self-esteem, anger, sleep difficulties, and life transitions. Our psychologists also offer online support for obsessive compulsive disorder, phobias, eating concerns, and substance use.
If you’re unsure whether online counselling is suited to your particular situation, please don’t hesitate to get in touch — we’re happy to talk it through with you before you book.
What are the benefits of online counselling?
It fits around your life
One of the most practical benefits of online psychology is flexibility. Sessions can be scheduled around work, family, and other commitments without the added time of travelling to and from an appointment. For people managing busy schedules, caring responsibilities, or unpredictable routines, that flexibility can make the difference between getting support and not getting it at all.
You can access support from anywhere
Online counselling removes geography as a barrier. Whether you live outside the Adelaide CBD, in a regional or rural area of South Australia, or are temporarily away from home, you can access the same quality of psychological care from wherever you are. All you need is a private space and a reliable internet connection — or simply a phone.
It can feel easier to open up
For many people, being in their own environment during a session actually makes it easier to talk honestly. There’s no waiting room, no unfamiliar space to navigate, and no journey home afterwards to manage. For people experiencing social anxiety, agoraphobia, or the kind of low mood that makes leaving the house genuinely difficult, online counselling removes a significant barrier to getting started.
There’s no commute, no parking, no rushing
The practical friction of getting to an appointment — finding parking, navigating traffic, arriving flustered and then trying to settle into a meaningful conversation — is simply removed. Many people find that beginning a session from the comfort of their own home means they arrive calmer and more ready to engage.
It offers greater privacy
Some people feel more comfortable accessing psychological support when they don’t have to walk into a practice or be seen in a waiting room. Online counselling and phone sessions offer a level of discretion that face-to-face appointments can’t always provide — which for some people makes the difference between reaching out and not.
Continuity of care
Life changes — jobs move, circumstances shift, and travel happens. Online psychology means your therapeutic relationship doesn’t have to be interrupted by the practicalities of life. If you’ve been working with one of our psychologists and your circumstances change temporarily, online or phone sessions allow that work to continue without disruption.
Phone counselling — simpler than you might think
Not everyone is comfortable with video, and that’s completely fine. Phone counselling is a legitimate and effective form of psychological support that many of our clients prefer. There’s no technology to set up, no camera to worry about, and no screen to look at. Just a conversation — private, accessible, and genuinely helpful.
Many people find that phone counselling feels surprisingly natural. Without the visual element, some clients actually find it easier to focus on what they’re saying and feeling, rather than on how they appear.
What to expect from an online psychology session
An online psychology session at BlueSky Psychology looks and feels very much like a face-to-face appointment. Your psychologist will give you their full attention, the conversation will be confidential, and the therapeutic approach will be the same evidence-based care you’d receive in the room.
Before your first online session, we’ll confirm which platform you’ll be using for video — something straightforward that doesn’t require any technical expertise. We’ll make sure you feel comfortable with the process before you begin, and our team is always available to help if any technical questions come up along the way.
For phone sessions, there’s even less to organise — your psychologist will call you at your scheduled appointment time.
To get the most from your online or phone session, it helps to find a private, comfortable space where you won’t be interrupted, and where you feel free to speak openly. If privacy at home is a concern, a parked car, a quiet room, or headphones can all help create the space you need.
Medicare rebates and online psychology
The good news on cost is straightforward. Medicare rebates apply to online psychology and phone counselling sessions in the same way they do to face-to-face appointments — provided you have a valid GP referral and a Mental Health Care Plan.
This means that with the right referral, a significant portion of your session fee is covered by Medicare, regardless of whether you’re attending in person, via video, or by phone. If you’re unsure about rebates or how a Mental Health Care Plan works, our team is happy to walk you through the process.
Is online counselling right for me?
Online psychology and phone counselling suit a wide range of people and situations. You might find it particularly helpful if you live outside the Adelaide CBD or in a regional area, if a busy schedule makes in-person appointments difficult to sustain, if anxiety or low mood makes leaving the house a genuine challenge, if you have caring responsibilities that limit your availability, if you simply prefer the comfort and privacy of your own environment, or if you’d like the flexibility to continue sessions when travel or life circumstances shift.
That said, there are some situations where face-to-face support may be more appropriate — and if that’s the case for you, we’ll always be honest about it. Our priority is matching you with the type of support most likely to help.
