How We Can Help
When you work with one of our psychologists, you’ll have the opportunity to understand your experiences better and develop practical ways to manage life’s challenges. From our central Adelaide location, we provide support that makes a real difference in your daily life.
Areas We Support
Depression
One in four Australians experience depression at some point in their lives, and here in Adelaide, we see how this challenge affects people from all walks of life. While depression can feel isolating, you don’t have to face it alone. Depression isn’t something you can simply ‘snap out of,’ and reaching out for support shows real strength. Our psychologists bring both expertise and understanding to help you find your way forward.
Anxiety
It’s natural to feel anxious sometimes – our bodies are designed to help us respond to challenging situations. But when anxiety starts to take over, making daily life difficult, it’s okay to seek support. Whether you’re experiencing sudden panic or ongoing worry, we can help you understand your anxiety and develop practical ways to manage it better.
Stress
When the demands of life feel overwhelming, stress can affect every part of your day. You might notice yourself feeling more agitated, having trouble slowing down, or responding differently to situations than you usually would. We can help you understand your stress triggers and develop strategies to manage them more effectively.
Relationship Support
Every relationship faces challenges at times. Whether you’re struggling with communication, trust, or life changes, our experienced psychologists can help you and your partner find a way forward together. We offer practical strategies for better communication, managing conflict, and rebuilding connection – all in a supportive, non-judgmental environment.
Managing Trauma
Many Australians experience traumatic events, and everyone’s response is unique. If you’re finding that past experiences are affecting your present life, we can help you process these experiences in a safe, supportive environment. Our approach is gentle and patient, moving at a pace that feels right for you
Support for Addiction
Making changes to alcohol or drug use takes courage, and it’s okay to feel uncertain about seeking help. Whether you’re wondering about your marijuana use, concerned about drinking, or dealing with other addictions, we offer understanding, non-judgmental support to help you make the changes you want to make.
Phobias
Many of us have things that make us nervous – whether it’s flying, heights, or unexpected situations. But when these fears start to limit your life or feel overwhelming, it’s worth reaching out for support. Our psychologists can help you understand your fears and develop practical ways to manage them, helping you move forward with confidence.
Bipolar Disorder
Living with bipolar disorder can feel like riding an emotional rollercoaster. The shifts between different mood states can affect every aspect of your life, from relationships to work. While everyone’s experience is unique, support is available. We can help you understand your mood patterns and develop strategies to manage them more effectively, working alongside any medical care you’re receiving.
Managing Anger
When anger feels out of control, it can affect our relationships, work, and wellbeing. You might be noticing that your reactions are stronger than you’d like, or perhaps others have expressed concern. Our psychologists can help you understand your anger triggers and develop more effective ways to express your feelings, helping you maintain healthier relationships and feel more in control.
Obsessions & Compulsions
When persistent thoughts or behaviours start to take over your daily life, it can feel exhausting and frustrating. Whether you’re dealing with unwanted thoughts or feel compelled to perform certain actions, you’re not alone. We can help you understand these patterns and develop practical strategies to reduce their impact on your life.
Eating Disorders
Struggling with food and body image can be an overwhelming and isolating experience. These challenges often run deeper than just eating habits, touching on complex emotional and personal issues. Our psychologists work as part of a caring support team, helping you develop a healthier relationship with food and your body while addressing the underlying factors that contribute to eating disorders.
Sleep Difficulties
Many of us struggle with sleep at some point in our lives. Whether you’re having trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking up feeling unrested, the impact on daily life can be significant. Our psychologists can help you understand what’s affecting your sleep and develop practical strategies for better rest, without relying solely on medication.
Panic Attacks
Experiencing a panic attack can be incredibly frightening, especially when they seem to come out of nowhere. If you’re finding yourself avoiding certain places or situations for fear of having another attack, we can help. Our psychologists understand how overwhelming panic can feel and can work with you to develop strategies to manage these experiences more effectively.
Drug and Alcohol Support
Whether you’re questioning your relationship with substances or looking to make changes, reaching out for support is an important first step. Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a psychologist and a counsellor?
A psychologist has completed a minimum of six years of university training including a Masters or Doctorate in Psychology, and is registered with AHPRA (the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency). Psychologists use evidence-based therapies and can conduct formal assessments and diagnose mental health conditions. ‘Counsellor’ is a broader term and is not a protected title in Australia, meaning training levels can vary significantly.
What happens in the first counselling session?
In your first session, your psychologist will ask about what’s brought you in, your current symptoms, relevant background and history, and what you’d like to achieve from therapy. It is an opportunity for you to ask questions too. The session is designed to help you feel heard and to allow your psychologist to recommend the best approach for your situation.
Do I need a referral to see a psychologist in Adelaide?
No. You do not need a referral to book a private appointment with a psychologist. However, to access Medicare rebates, your GP will need to prepare a Mental Health Treatment Plan and provide a referral. This entitles you to rebates on up to 10 sessions per calendar year.
How much does seeing a psychologist in Adelaide cost?
Session fees vary depending on the psychologist and the type of service. With a Mental Health Treatment Plan from your GP, Medicare rebates can significantly reduce your out-of-pocket cost. Some private health insurance extras policies also offer partial rebates. Contact our team for current fee information.
What issues can a psychologist help with?
Psychologists at BlueSky Psychology work with a wide range of concerns including anxiety, depression, stress, relationship difficulties, trauma, grief, anger, phobias, OCD, panic attacks, insomnia, chronic pain, addictions, bipolar disorder, and adjustment to life changes. We also provide ADHD and Autism assessments.
Is what I say in sessions confidential?
Yes. Psychologists in Australia are bound by strict confidentiality obligations under the Psychology Board of Australia and the Australian Psychological Society Code of Ethics. What you share in sessions remains confidential except in very limited circumstances — such as a serious risk of harm to yourself or others, or where legally required.
Can I do counselling sessions online?
Yes. BlueSky Psychology offers Telehealth sessions via secure video conferencing. Online sessions use the same evidence-based approaches as in-person sessions and are eligible for Medicare rebates. Many clients find Telehealth convenient and just as effective as attending in person.
