Eating Disorders

When food and weight take over

What are Eating Disorders

An eating disorder is so much more than a difficult relationship with food. It’s an experience that can quietly consume a person’s thoughts, shape their sense of worth, and affect nearly every part of their daily life. If this resonates with you — or with someone you care about — please know that what you’re experiencing is a recognised condition, not a reflection of vanity or weakness, and that support is available.

Eating disorders are often rooted in much deeper experiences — a need for control, difficult emotions that feel impossible to manage any other way, a fragile sense of self-worth tied to appearance or achievement. Understanding those roots is just as important as addressing the behaviours themselves, which is why the right support makes such a difference.

Types of Eating Disorders

Anorexia Nervosa

Anorexia involves a significant restriction of food intake driven by an intense fear of gaining weight, even when a person is already underweight. You might notice a persistent belief that your body is larger than it is, a preoccupation with food, weight, and body image that crowds out other thoughts, feelings of guilt around eating, or physical signs like irregular or absent menstrual cycles.

People experiencing anorexia often describe a strong need for control in a life that feels uncertain — and food becomes the place where that control is exercised. It’s a condition that affects around 1% of the population and, in many cases, requires a coordinated multidisciplinary approach involving medical and nutritional care alongside psychological support. For this reason, anorexia is not something we treat at BlueSky Psychology — but we would encourage you warmly to seek the specialist support this condition deserves, and we’re happy to help point you in the right direction.

Bulimia Nervosa

Bulimia involves cycles of binge eating — consuming large amounts of food in a short period, often to the point of physical discomfort — followed by attempts to compensate through vomiting, laxatives, or excessive exercise. The feelings that accompany this cycle are often ones of shame, guilt, and being deeply out of control, which can make it very difficult to talk about.

Bulimia affects around 5% of the population, and it frequently develops as a way of managing difficult emotions — sadness, anxiety, grief, anger, or stress — that feel overwhelming in other ways. Understanding that emotional connection is central to finding a way through.

Binge Eating and Overeating

Beyond anorexia and bulimia, other eating concerns are also common. Binge Eating Disorder involves consuming very large amounts of food in a short period without purging — often accompanied by significant distress and shame. Overeating Disorder involves a persistent compulsion to eat beyond what’s needed, which can feel just as difficult to manage as more widely recognised conditions.

How We Can Help

At BlueSky Psychology, our experienced psychologists work with bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, and overeating concerns. We’ll take the time to understand the origins of your particular experience — the patterns, the emotions, and the history that has shaped your relationship with food — before developing an individualised plan together.

Support might involve working through the anxieties and beliefs around food and body image, building healthier ways of managing difficult emotions, improving self-esteem, and gradually developing a relationship with food that feels less frightening and more sustainable. You’ll be met with care and without judgement, every step of the way. If you’d like to talk with someone, we’re here. Contact us via info@blueskypsychology.com or call us on 08 8212 3944. You’ll find us at Level 10, 108 King William Street, Adelaide.
