Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
What is ACT?
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy is a modern, evidence-based psychological therapy that helps people develop a healthier relationship with their thoughts, feelings, and emotions. Rather than trying to eliminate difficult experiences, ACT focuses on helping individuals build psychological flexibility — the ability to stay present, open, and engaged in life even when challenges arise.
ACT is based on the understanding that painful thoughts and emotions are a normal part of the human experience. Many people become stuck when they spend significant energy trying to avoid, control, or suppress these internal experiences. While this may provide short-term relief, it can often increase distress over time and prevent people from living in ways that are meaningful and fulfilling.
Through ACT, clients learn practical strategies to:
- Manage difficult thoughts and emotions more effectively
- Reduce the impact of self-criticism, worry, and overthinking
- Develop mindfulness and present-moment awareness
- Clarify personal values and what matters most to them
- Take meaningful action towards a richer and more satisfying life
ACT combines mindfulness techniques with behavioural strategies to support emotional wellbeing and resilience. Sessions may include learning how to observe thoughts without becoming overwhelmed by them, practicing acceptance of uncomfortable emotions, and identifying actions that align with personal goals and values.
ACT can be helpful for a wide range of concerns, including:
- Anxiety and stress
- Depression and low mood
- Grief and loss
- Trauma-related difficulties
- Chronic pain and health conditions
- Relationship difficulties
- Workplace stress and burnout
- Life transitions and adjustment difficulties
Your Experience At BlueSky
One of the key strengths of ACT is that it does not aim to “get rid” of emotions, but instead helps people respond to them in more flexible and compassionate ways. This approach can empower individuals to move forward with greater confidence, purpose, and emotional balance.
At BlueSky Psychology, we use Acceptance and Commitment Therapy as part of our therapeutic approach to support clients in developing practical coping skills, emotional resilience, and meaningful long-term change.
